Robert DeNiro's directorial debut is a very sterling effort, a
nostalgic memoir of growing up in 1960's New York which deals with family conflict, the allure of gangster life, racial issues, first love and the trials and tribulations of growing up. Â Its
only fault is that it may be 10 or 20 minutes too long due to stretching its canvas a little too far and wide, but good performances fill up that time and Chazz Palminteri's play makes such a
transition from stage to screen, it's difficult to imagine it not being written direct for film in the first place.
