Olivia Colman is outstanding in this psychological drama based upon Elena Ferrante’s novel and adapted by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who also directed. Colman stars as Leda Caruso, a middle-aged professor who, upon a vacation in Greece, befriends a young mother whose daughter goes missing and is promptly found, but loses her cherished doll which Leda has secretively taken.Â
The event causes Leda to reflect upon her own experience as a young mother and an inter-marital affair which separated her family.
The film ends quite abruptly and doesn’t quite tackle the issues that it raises, but it’s worth a watch simply for the strength of the acting performances.
